 | UCSD Physician-Scientist Wins National Honor for Pediatric Research Victor Nizet, MD, a professor of pediatrics and pharmacy at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPPSS), and a member of the medical staff at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego, received the E. Mead Johnson Award for Research in Pediatrics at the 2008 Annual Meeting of Pediatric Academic Societies held in Honolulu.
|  | Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Appointment Dr. Mark Sawyer has been appointed to serve on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) starting in June 2008. Dr. Sawyer is currently the Principal Investigator and Executive Medical Director for the San Diego Immunization Partnership, a collaboration between the Immunization Program of San Diego County and the University of California, Division of Community Pediatrics. He is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of California San Diego Medical School and Pediatric Infectious Disease Consultant for Kaiser Permanente San Diego. The MCS Committee created a detailed review and selection process. The MCS is defined as “… one who excels at assessment of the whole patient and delivery of the highest quality care. Superb history and examination skills are the base of this expertise. S/he is the ultimate diagnostician who creates effective management strategies and communicates and interacts compassionately with the patient and family. Respect for and partnership with all staff working in the clinical environment is critical. |  | Dr. Tina Chambers, Pediatrics Faculty Member, named PI on National Children’s Study The Department of Pediatrics, partnering with the Department of Reproductive Medicine at UCSD, San Diego State University’s Graduate School of Public Health, the First 5 Commission and the County Health Department, in collaboration with University of California Irvine, has been selected to lead the San Diego County study site for the National Children’s Study (NCS). |  | UCSD Researcher Awarded One of First-Ever NIH New Investigator Awards Jing Yang, Ph.D., an assistant professor of pharmacology and pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, is working to develop new approaches to study how carcinoma cells metastasize to distant organs. Novel ideas by new scientific investigators like Dr. Yang have prompted Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to make a major investment in the future of science. |
