The Rady
Children's Heart Institute -San Diego, an institute without walls, was created
to integrate and coordinate the clinical, research and educational programs of the
Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery Divisions at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.
The Rady Children’s Hospital Division of Pediatric Cardiology encompasses the Section of Pediatric Cardiology, UCSD Department of Pediatrics and affiliated cardiologists who are members of Children’s Specialists of San Diego. The Division, in conjunction with the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, provides state-of-the-art cardiovascular care for children with the whole spectrum of congenital and acquired heart disease, as well as many adults with congenital heart disease. The Division serves a large regional referral area in Southern California, as well as the State of Hawaii.
The Division’s clinical volumes in the academic year 2007-2008 were substantial and continued to grow over previous years in spite of continuing limitations in the number of cardiology staff available to serve the population. The Division’s fellowship training program is fully accredited and trains four fellows in the standard three-year program, and
one fourth
year fellow in interventional congenital cardiology. The Division’s research program continued to move forward in both basic and in clinical research.
The academic year 2007-2008 was a building year for the Division. Dr. EL-Said (a specialist in interventional cardiology and echocardiography) and Dr. Davis (a specialist in exercise physiology and exercise testing) joined the Division Faculty as of the fall of 2007. Dr. Printz (a specialist in MRI imaging and echocardiography) has been recruited to augment the non-invasive imaging staff and will arrive in February 2009. Active current recruitments include an electrophysiologist, a cardiac transplant specialist, a general clinical cardiologist, and a basic scientist.
